COMFWB extraordinary general assembly: For more legal instruments and decisions strengthening in favor of Women in Business

The COMFWB extraordinary general assembly took place on February 20th, 2024, at the Radisson Blu Convention Center in Kigali, Rwanda. All 20 member states were in attendance with the aim of enhancing COMFWB's legal framework and making decisions to bolster the organization.

The Rwandan Government was represented by Honorable Professor Jean Chrysostom Ngabitsinze Minister of Trade and Industry, who was the guest of honor . In his opening speech, he emphasized the pivotal role of women in business as the cornerstone of regional economies within the COMESA Zone. He stressed the significance of transparency and accountability in supporting women in business and urged all COMESA Member States to fully support them.

Madam Angelina Wibabara,, the Chairperson of COMFWBRwanda, highlighted the crucial role of governments in supporting women, particularly in her chapter. She acknowledged the support from the Ministry of Trade of Rwanda and urged other member states to emulate this leadership.

Madam Maureen Sumbwe , Chairperson of the General Assembly, recognized the support from partners for women in business, particularly from COMESA, which is vital for the Federation's operations.

Mr Chikakula Miti, emphasized the challenges faced by women in business and underscored the pivotal role of the private sector, especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), in regional industrialization and employment creation.

Madam Beatrice Hamusonde , Gender Director representing the COMESA Secretary General, expressed gratitude to national women associations for their commitment and support to women in business. She recognized the significant role of women entrepreneurs in driving economic growth, job creation, and poverty alleviation across member states. She encouraged women entrepreneurs to leverage established policies within COMESA Member States to enhance the business environment and capacity building.

Two key resolutions were passed during the meeting: the appointment of Mr. Miti CHIKAKULA as the new CEO ofCOMFWB and the confirmation of the 5thCOMFWB TRADE FAIR, scheduled to take place in Madagascar in June 2024.
